Seeing the Future: How AI is Transforming Optometry

Optometry today sits at the intersection of human expertise and rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, captured in this image which depicts me surrounded by both traditional instruments and futuristic symbols. It reflects a profession evolving, not replacing its foundations, but expanding them.

The principles behind AI are not new. Even decades ago, prescribing glasses was never just about numbers. Decisions depended on a patient’s visual needs, psychology, culture and lifestyle. In many ways, optometrists have always acted like “human algorithms,” balancing multiple variables to reach the best outcome.

AI enhances this process by analysing vast amounts of data from clinical tools, global databases and research. Modern optometry already uses technology to refine prescriptions and customise lenses based on worldwide data.

AI simply scales this capability, identifying patterns and insights beyond human reach.

Its greatest impact is in managing complex eye diseases. Conditions like glaucoma require combining multiple data points including optic nerve features, visual fields, eye pressure, and corneal thickness. AI integrates these simultaneously, improving accuracy and enabling earlier detection and superior management. The same applies to diabetic eye disease, where subtle changes can be identified sooner.

Looking ahead, AI is likely to transform surgical care. It’s plausible that in the foreseeable future, cataract procedures could be performed using AI-guided lasers and robotic systems, increasing precision and personalisation.

Despite these advances, the human element remains essential. While some believe patients prefer human care, others argue younger generations may favour machines, the reality is a balance. AI provides data, but trust, empathy, and judgment remain uniquely human strengths.

The future of optometry isn’t human or AI. It’s both, working together to help us all see more clearly.
