Photosensitive or photochromic lenses were originally developed for glass lenses but more recently it has been possible to incorporate a similar technology into plastic lenses. One brand of lens which has been widely utilised is Transition. Similar technology has been developed by other companies.
Photosensitive lenses are popular with people who are sensitive to light, particularly if they regularly move from indoors to outdoors. The density of the tint is dependent upon the level of elimination and consequently adapts to the visual environment.
Earlier forms of the lens were slow to react and lost their effectiveness over time. However, the latest technology has overcome these limitations and has led to more people choosing this option.
However, it is important to note that as the change is dependent upon activation by UV light these lenses do not change in the motor car because the windscreen absorbs the ultraviolet.
However, Drivewear photosensitive lenses do adjust for light in the motorcar but retain a darker tint even indoors.
